Heads Up improves students’ reading skills.

  • Heads Up students reached reading proficiency at twice the rate of other students in the same schools (No Child Left Behind data, 2003-2005).
  • On standardized test scores, students enrolled in Heads Up improved reading scores at a rate faster than other students [Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) test, 2005-2006].
  • At the beginning of the school year, only 15% of Heads Up students scored at grade level on a key indicator of reading proficiency. By the end of the school year, 77% had achieved grade level (DIBELS data, 2005-2006). 

Heads Up contributes to school success.

  • Schools with the Heads Up program increased reading proficiency at double the rate of other elementary schools in D.C., despite the fact that they started at a significantly lower point (No Child Left Behind data, 2003-2005).

Families love learning at Heads Up.

  • A survey of students and parents in the Heads Up program found that 88% of students felt safe in the Heads Up program (June 2006 survey).
  • 90% of students said Heads Up helped them see how doing well in school can help them later, and 92% said that, because of Heads Up, they want to go as far as possible in school (June 2006 survey).
  • When asked if Heads Up improved their child’s reading skills, 100% of parents said it did and that they would recommend the program to other parents (June 2006 survey).
