What We Do

AmeriCorps at Heads Up

“My first summer as an AmeriCorps tutor was amazing….I remember the time Antoine read a level one phonics book all by himself. He was so proud and so was I — I actually cried, though he didn’t know that.” – former Heads Up tutor, now a middle school teacher

Heads Up AmeriCorps members commit to a year of service as tutors in D.C. schools.

Training

Heads Up hosts training seminars over the course of the year to give tutors the opportunity to reflect on their experience and learn from peers, the first of which will be held in June.

Summer and School year

During the summer, AmeriCorps members serve full-time, providing homework help and literacy instruction to elementary or middle school students in the after-school program. Throughout the school year, AmeriCorps members work for 15-20 hours a week.

Evaluation

All Head Up tutors receive daily supervision and coaching from staff and experienced public school teachers. AmeriCorps members are evaluated two times per year.

Benefits & Compensation

AmeriCorps members receive a service stipend and education award, as well as free summer housing at George Washington University.
