What We Do
Become a Tutor
“I loved working with the children. On the last day, one student’s grandmother personally thanked me for making a difference in his life and that meant a lot to me.” – HU alumni, now a law student
Heads Up offers college students the chance to learn, lead and serve in their community. There are two ways to join us:
- Lead tutor. Heads Up lead tutors are AmeriCorps members. They commit to a year of service, working full-time during the summer and part-time during the school year. Learn more about becoming a Heads Up AmeriCorps member.
- Tutor. Other college students commit to serve for 1-2 semesters, volunteering for 2-3 afternoons a week.
Why tutor?
- Co-lead a classroom of 10-15 students
- Help kindergarten through sixth graders become better readers
- Use federal work study or volunteer
- Develop valuable teaching and leadership skills
- Gain firsthand knowledge of an urban school
- Form friendships with peers from other universities
- Make a difference in the life of a child
