What We Do
Tutor Position Description
General Description
Heads Up tutors provide academic assistance to K-6 students enrolled in the Heads Up after-school programs while promoting the principles of service, leadership, and learning. They are indispensable members of a grade level team consisting of up to 6 college students. Program runs 5 afternoons a week with approximately 110 elementary school students at each of Head’s Up 6 neighborhood sites in Washington, DC.
Specific Responsibilities
- Attend program at least 2 (preferably 3) afternoons a week, the same afternoons for the duration of the semester
- As a team, assist students with homework and co-lead literature based activities for a class of 16 students
- Enforce and follow all program rules and disciplinary procedures
- Work with Heads Up AmeriCorps members and fellow tutors in lesson planning, as appropriate given tutor’s availability, interest, and experience
- Attend all of Heads Up’s training sessions

- Energy, time, and enthusiasm to work with children
- Commitment to public service
- Relevant leadership skills and service experience
Time Commitment
- Tutors should be available at least two afternoons each week from 3:00pm – 6:00pm, in addition to attending training sessions and planning meetings. Tutors eligible for Federal Work Study will be compensated based on the university FWS regulations generally including reading-related training, preparation, evaluation, and actual tutoring time in Heads Up’s after-school tutoring program.
Duration
Minimum one semester commitment (preferably 1-year)
