What We Do

Heads Up operates after-school and summer academic programs for hundreds of children in the lowest performing schools in Washington, D.C. To give these children a strong academic footing, Heads Up developed a unique curriculum that is age and culturally appropriate and aligned with D.C. public school standards.

We work closely with the teachers and principals in our partner schools to reinforce daytime learning and track our students’ progress. In addition to the literacy program, we conduct enrichment opportunities with our students, such as field trips and local research projects. During the summer, Heads Up offers a full-time academic program that includes math, reading and community service days.

By using college students as tutors in our classrooms, we enable them to forge relationships with school-age children and serve as powerful role models. With over half of our tutors comprised of people of color, and nearly 75% attending college on financial aid, Heads Up ensures that children in our program can look up to young adults from all backgrounds.
